Galinda's Shiz Uniform
Galinda's school uniform is work two
ways, with the jacket and without. When she first appears in this
outfit she is wearing a jacket. Later, she has on a shirt and vest with a
tie instead of the jacket. She wears her Shiz Uniform Shoes during
the first scene when she is wearing the Bubble Dress. The blouse
worn has a light pin stripe pattern.
"The school colors for Shiz--a
blue and white design. Elphaba is in dark blue...Galinda/Glinda in perky
white. Costumes help describe their personalities and the central
characters' emotional journeys. Hilferty explains in an Entertainment
Design magazine article that she combined the Shiz University colors of
white and blue for the ensemble outfits and used the colors individually
for Glinda and Elphaba. "What I was trying to get at the end was an
icon for each of them, where they become specifically representative:
Glinda for goodness and Elphaba [who publically represented the Wicked
Witch of the West] for evil. By using blue and white as the school
colors, I was able to have Elphaba all in blue, and Glinda all in white.
The goal was to make the two women be the most outstanding thing in
every world they entered." Resource:

Original Dress
Here are a few pictures of the original
Shiz uniform Galinda wore in early productions. This outfit is
different in that it is a one piece dress with similar pleats as
Elphaba's uniform. It has tucks going horizontal across the bodice
turning into pleats at the waistline. The skirt hem also has a
diagonal hemline with the shorter side starting on the left and getting
longer to the right. The jacket is also different with a skewed
closure going horizontal from the left down to the right side.
