Elphaba Defying Gravity Dress Breakdown and Analysis

Below is a detailed breakdown and analysis of Elphaba's Defying Gravity dress.  I break the outfit down from head to toe, starting from the top!  See Elphaba's Defying Gravity Dress Page for full pictures of the outfit.

Hat

The hat is a pointy witches hat that is a little lop-sided with the brim on the left side turned up slightly.  The point of the hat is not a symmetrical cone, it is a little crooked and squiggly.  The hat is not plain black.  The fabric used is black with a dark blue or grey, I am going to "small splatters" or almost scale looking spots, covering the hat.  The brim of the hat also has, I guess you could call, binding, on it.

Wig

She still has her long brown hair here but it is down with soft waves to it.  She wears her hat in these scenes so I can't tell if it is pulled back slightly like she has it with the white jacket.  It probably is the same wig to aid in costume changes.

Dress

This dress is a simple black dress with a waste line.  The top portion of the dress has a collar and buttons running down the front to the waist line which has a "V" shape.  It looks like there are about 15 buttons starting on the collar going to the waist.  The sleeves start out with a puff and change to a plain straight sleeve.  The skirt is a strait A line skirt that goes to mid-calf length.  The skirt isn't super full.  Also note that the fabric has a really nice crepe type texture to it.

Cape

The cape!  The cape is fastened under the chin with a plastic buckle.  It is made of a thin woven material of varying textures.  It is not long in length, maybe a little past the hips.

Shoes

Her shoes are still a chunky boot in black or brown.
